NatCORR Advisory Board

We had our inaugural meeting in early February, and we’re overwhelmed with gratitude for this diverse group of extraordinary individuals making up our Board. We are looking forward to their guidance and input as NatCORR evolves.

Since our last Newsletter, we have gained additional NatCORR Advisory Board members. We welcome Dr Margaret Moreton of AIDR and Andrew King from One Planet.  

They join Brendon Munge, Dr Clare Dallat, Dr David Marsden (Deputy Chair), Mark Beech, Sandy Allen-Craig, Erinn Campbell, Dr Loren Miller (Chair), Dylan Jones, and Dr Scott Polley.

Weather Survey

Our National Weather Survey closed on February 29th and a sincere thank you to all of you who contributed to the results. We had almost 150 responses and, from these, have gained a great deal of insight into what gaps exist and the issues/frustrations people are having with current weather forecasting for Australia.  

Once analysed, we will be sharing the survey results with the National, State and Territory Peak Bodies so they can pass this on to their memberships. Our co-authors at the Bureau of Meteorology will also have access to this information.

These survey responses will shape the professional development we offer in this area in 2024. Stay tuned for details of these offerings.

Incident Response Workshops Return

Back by popular demand, we are again partnering with Dr Clare Dallat from Risk Resolve to present four Incident Response Workshops in August 2024. We will be travelling to two of the States that missed out last year and re-visiting another two.

Put these dates in your PD calendar:

• Sydney – Tuesday 20 August

• Hobart – Wednesday 21 August

It’s been a long, hot Summer…..

This summer has been incredibly hot, especially in Western Australia, which has seen multiple Heatwave Warnings issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

Carnarvon set a record for the highest temperature on Earth during February at a scorching 50 degrees Celsius. Surprisingly, heatwaves, referred to as the “Silent Killer”, claim more lives in Australia than fires and floods, yet they receive less media coverage.

This raises the importance of heat management, particularly for those spending significant time outdoors, and where there is a duty of care for others. Exertional heatstroke has also been in the news lately. NatCORR is dedicated to addressing heat management as a growing outdoor risk. More information to come.
