Outdoor Risk & Resilience Symposium
On 9 July, NatCORR hosted the Outdoor Risk and Resilience Symposium in Canberra, in conjunction with the Outdoors NSW and ACT Outdoor Industry Summit on July 10-11.
The Symposium Day brought together outdoor practitioners, researchers, and emergency management experts to share insights on climate, weather, disaster resilience, and risk management in the outdoors.
A huge thank you to Lori Modde and Outdoors NSW & ACT for their stellar work behind the scenes – from logistics to promotion – and for hosting their Outdoor Industry Summit alongside us. We started the day with a heartfelt welcome by the Governor General, Sam Mostyn AC. The day was then anchored by our unflappable emcee Jessica Bulger. We’re also immensely grateful to our outstanding presenters for delivering thought-provoking sessions:
Dr Karl Braganza and Mary-Jane McLeod (The Bureau)
Sally Kuschel (NEMA)
John Richardson (AIDR)
Lori Modde (ONSWACT)
Dr Clare Dallat (Risk Resolve)
Ben Lovell, Dr Loren Miller, Nicky Hanson, Ellie Hargrave (OBA/NatCORR)
Dr Grant Lynch (USyd)
Leanne Hodge and Helen McDonnell (Parks Victoria)
Shaun Elwood (Lithgow City Council)
Sam Stedman (Outer Limits Adventure Fitness)
Brendon Munge (Uni Sunshine Coast)
Dr Jeff Jackson (Canada)
Peta White (Deakin University).
What attendees said:
“NatCORR day was extremely valuable with excellent presenters and content.”
“Excellent content and industry connection on key issues.”
“Much more NatCORR please!”
Where to next?
Attendees called for more practical workshops, stronger links with the disaster management sector, scenario-based incident response training, and further guidance on weather, climate, fatigue, and psycho-social risks.
The strong turnout and positive feedback confirm NatCORR’s vital role in supporting a resilient and risk-aware outdoor sector – we look forward to building on this momentum.
